Discovery Place Social Media
Graphic Design + Creative Direction
Being a creative for a Science Center is so much fun. I am always partnering with our Manager of Social Media and Content Strategy to create ways for us to interact with our audience on social to help deepen their love for our brand and mission. Here are some of my favorite things we’ve done on social media.
Stickers
I created a set of animated GIF stickers for Museum visitors to use during their visit. During the first week the original set of GIFS generated over 50 thousand views. These fun stickers added another level of brand interaction to our social channels.
bug bistro
To generate buzz around our exhibition Bug Lab, we created a social worthy pop-up experience called “Bug Bistro.” We took the bistro to different hot spots around Charlotte and challenged our community to become a “professional bug eater.” I created props and backdrops, and the reward for those who dared to try one of our delicious bugs.
The increased engagement we saw online with this exhibition was created by offering real world experiences that were 100% made for Instagram.
The Lost Lego Brick
Building on what we learned from Bug Bistro, when it came time to promote our next exhibition, Towers of Tomorrow, we new we wanted to blend the social world and the real world again.
We ordered some oversized Lego Bricks and I spray painted them metallic gold and put a label on them that contained unique coupon codes. We then hid them all over public spaces in the Charlotte Metro area. Every few hours we would release a clue on social that would lead our searchers to their prize.
This promotion not only lead to a 2,000+ Increase in followers, but it also encouraged our followers to turn on post notifications so they would know the minute the clues hit Instagram. Pretty good results for some Legos and a $10 can of spray paint.
World Emoji day
I decided to make some fun story graphics for our Social Manager to share for the cartoon holiday. I took favorite Exhibits around our Museum and described them with 3 emojis. We challenged our followers to guess them, but then we gave them the opportunity to engage with us a little more and make their own emoji descriptions.
